The Scientific Advisory Board meets in the PEI - exchange on recent developments in biomedicine

The Scientific Advisory Board (Wissenschaftlicher Beirat) of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) met on 9 April 2019. An important topic of the meeting was the development in regulatory work in the field of biomedicines. This included new EU marketing authorisations such as CAR-T cell therapies as well as advanced gene therapies in clinical development for the treatment of haemophilia.

The Scientific Advisory Board accompanies and supports the PEI in doing research and regulatory work at an internationally competitive level. It is composed of scientifically recognised experts from the fields in which the PEI is active. The experts are appointed by the President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut with the approval of the Federal Ministry of Health (Bundesministerium für Gesundheit, BMG) for four years. The Scientific Advisory Board meets twice a year. The current Advisory Board has been in office since 30 May 2017. It consists of 15 members, mainly from university hospitals in Germany and abroad, from the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Healthcare (EDQM), the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut as well as the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Permanent guests include representatives of the BMG, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

"We are pleased that our Scientific Advisory Board supports us with broad expertise in all areas that are of great importance for our daily work as well as for our strategic development," says Professor Klaus Cichutek, President of the PEI. One topic that is currently not missing at the meetings related to European cooperation was the Brexit. The employees of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut have already made extensive preparations concerning this.
