The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), the Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, is also responsible for immunological veterinary drugs. This area is subject to the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft BMEL). The protection against infection for animals in food production and for pets is also highly relevant for human health. Ministerial Director Dr Dietrich Rassow and Ministerial Councillor Dr Axel Stockmann from the BMEL informed themselves today in Langen about the achievements of the PEI in the national and European area in the interest of animal and human health.

The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut is not only responsible for vaccines and biomedicines for humans, but also for immunological veterinary drugs such as vaccines, allergens and antibody-containing drugs. With its own intensive research, it supports the development of such veterinary medicinal products for the protection of animals and humans. Regulatory activities range from scientific advice to academic and industrial developers in the early development phase of veterinary medicinal products, through federal batch testing and release, to monitoring the safety of veterinary medicinal products after marketing authorisation (pharmacovigilance). Professor Klaus Cichutek, President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Vice President Professpr Dr Stefan Vieths, the acting head of the Veterinary Medicine Department, Dr Esther Werner, and other experts from the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut presented Dr Dietrich Rassow and Dr Axel Stockmann the services of the Institute in this field. They discussed the new legislation on veterinary medicinal products and presented the database on side effects for immunological veterinary medicinal products which are to be published - as in the field of medicinal products for humans, the evaluation is carried out within the European network. Other topics discussed at the meeting included the involvement of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut in the Standing Committee on Veterinary Vaccination (STIKo Vet) and other regulatory tasks as well as committee work at European level. However, the "dry" theory was not the only one to be discussed - Dr Rassow and Dr Stockmann were able to get an idea of how the experimental vaccine testing and the research accompanying the testing are carried out.
