The Association of German Allergologists e.V. (AeDA) has presented this award since 1998 to individuals for their services to the field of allergology. Mahler has been the head of the Allergology Division at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut since 2017. Before her current position at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, she worked at the Dermatology Clinic of the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen from 2004 to 2017 as a senior physician, head of the allergy, occupational dermatology, and medical attestation departments, and head of the research group Molecular Allergology. Mahler was also spokesperson for the Interdisciplinary Allergy Center at the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen from 2010 to 2017. She has been a professor and member of the Faculty of Medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg since 2009. She is honoured with the Viktor Ruppert Medal for her accomplishments in applied allergology.

This is the third medal recognising the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut's scientific and regulatory work since 1998. In 2018, Professor Stefan Vieths, Vice President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, received the Viktor Ruppert Medal – one of the highest allergology awards in Germany.

Background – Viktor Ruppert Medal

Dr Viktor Ruppert (1909-1989) was a doctor of internal medicine and allergology. He is considered the spiritual father of the "Working Group of Applied Allergology" founded in 1969 (today the "Association of German Allergologists", AeDA) of which he was the founding chairman, chairman, and honorary chairman for many years. The Viktor Ruppert Medal is one of the highest awards that the AeDA awards annually.
