Construction Permit Granted for Media Channel

The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut is supplied with the media of electricity, heating, cooling, and steam by DFS Energy – a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS). The supply lines to the current location of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut run through an underground accessible media channel. The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut's new building will also receive its energy supply from DFS Energy in the future. The existing media channel will therefore be extended to the new building site as a preliminary measure for the new building. A permit for this construction project has now been obtained. Start of construction for the media channel is currently planned for autumn 2025.

The route of the media channel will run in the corridor between the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut and the DFS and will be directly adjacent to the existing buildings. The media channel will be predominantly constructed using a closed and thus low-emmission construction method for the tunnelling process. This will prevent any disproportionate disturbances to regular operations and to the neighbourhood by reducing vibrations and noise to a minimum. The final section of the new channel must cross under Paul-Ehrlich-Straße and the underlying media supply lines and drainage pipes in order to reach the new building site.

Current plans state that the shell construction of the new tunnel structure, including the necessary construction work and excavations as well as all connecting structures and emergency exits, is to be completed by the end of 2026.
